Haiku

Objectives: Students will be able to use imagery in their own work; students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of haiku structure

Overview: One of the most recognizable poetry genres is haiku.  A haiku is a Japanese poem that contains seventeen syllables—5 in the first line, 7 in the second line, and 5 in the third.  Haikus are usually about nature and that which is found within it.  All haiku is full of imagery. 

Vital Vocabulary: syllable- a word or part of a word pronounced with a single, uninterrupted sounding of the voice imagery- words that appeal to and entice the senses                      Do Now: To help you get started with your poems, make a list of items that appeal to your senses during each season.  For example, you may recall a cool drink of tangy lemonade on a hot summer day or the vibrant red color of the leaves in autumn.

Read the following haiku carefully.  List all examples of imagery                                                                       The warm August sun                Shining brightly in the sky                                                                      Warms me to my soul

Assignment: Your task for the next two days is to write FOUR distinct haiku poems—one for each season.  You must use as much imagery as possible and you must use at least one simile or metaphor in each haiku. Competencies addressedE04: Language AnalysisE06: Writing Process This assignment is due no later than Friday March 20, 2009.
