Harlem Renaissance High School Ms. France-Power of Poetry Course Objectives: Students will be able to use imagery in their own work; students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of haiku structure Overview: One of the most recognizable poetry genres is haiku. A haiku is a Japanese poem that contains seventeen syllables-5 in the first line, 7 in the second line, and 5 in the third. Haikus are usually about nature and that which is found within it. All haiku is full of imagery. Vital Vocabulary: syllable- a word or part of a word pronounced with a single, uninterrupted sounding of the voice WINTER SPRING SUMMER AUTUMN
Read the following haiku carefully. List all examples of imagery Assignment: Your task for the next two days is to write FOUR distinct haiku poems-one for each season. You must use as much imagery as possible and you must use at least one simile or metaphor in each haiku. Competencies addressed This assignment is due no later than Friday March 20, 2009.
